Building and Running Example Applications from the CodeWarrior IDE

With the SDK supporting CodeWarrior IDE, applications can be built for the emulator and launched from the IDE interface. This is a typical scenario when modifying and debugging application source code.

Building and Running an Application on the Emulator

To build an application in the CodeWarrior IDE and then launch it in the emulator, do the following:

  1. Start the CodeWarrior IDE.

  2. In the CodeWarrior IDE, import the application project file by selecting File > Import Project from .mmp File menu command.

  3. In the Symbian Importer - SDK Selection dialog box which appears, select the appropriate vendor and S60 SDK to be used with the application. Click Next.

  4. In the Symbian Importer - MMP File Selection dialog box, enter the name of the .mmp file (that is, <application name>.mmp) that you want to build and run in the File Selection text field.

The .mmp project file of an application is located in the group subdirectory. For example,

<S60_SDK_installation_directory>\S60Ex\helloworldbasic\group\helloworld.mmp

You can use the Browse button to browse and locate the appropriate .mmp file, or enter the absolute path of the .mmp file in question.

Note: Leave the Platform Selection field blank (the emulator platform for CodeWarrior is WINSCW).

  1. Click Finish to import the .mmp file.

Once imported, the CodeWarrior IDE converts the .mmp project file to an .mcp CodeWarrior project file. This enables you to, for example, modify the application in the CodeWarrior IDE.

To build and launch the application from the CodeWarrior IDE, do the following:

  1. In the CodeWarrior IDE, select Project > Make from the menu bar (or press F7).

  2. The CodeWarrior IDE builds a debug (udeb) build of the application. To run the udeb build of the application on the emulator, do the following:

  3. With the .mcp project file of the application open in the  CodeWarrior IDE, select Project > Run from the menu bar.

The emulator is opened.  For detailed information, please, refer to Running an Example Application in the SDK Emulator.

Building and Running the Application for a Target Device

Building and running an application for a target device form the CodeWarrior IDE involves using the IDE as well as command prompts. You can create the needed GCCE UREL build with the CodeWarrior IDE, but you will need to use command prompts for creating the .sis file.

  1. With the .mcp project file of the application open in the CodeWarrior IDE, select Project > Set Default > GCCE UREL from the menu bar.

The build target is set to GCCE UREL.

  1. Build the application by clicking the source tree in the IDE and selecting Project > Make from the menu bar.

The CodeWarrior IDE builds all source files into a GCCE UREL build.

  1. Create a .sis file of the GCCE UREL build and install it to a target device. See Making a .sis file of the GCCE UREL build section, for detailed instructions on how to do this.
